On a Saturday, no less
May 24, 2008

New comic is up for Saturday, just to fill out the week a little more. I've been enjoying this story greatly and it will continue even further on Monday - by the way, Saw Indiana Jones 4. Didn't love it but I didn't hate it either. CGI makes Indy seem in less danger. Name wasn't in credits, but it was sure fun to hope!

Have a good weekend - I have a few surprises up my sleeve which I will announce only when ready (a new habit I've been getting into lately).

Do it.

Comic's up. Consume.

I'm dead serious
May 21, 2008

I'm not exaggerating even a little bit with the title of today's comic. This one was four years in the making, ever since Prologue ended (can you believe that's how long it's been?) Anyway, enjoy!

In further news, I've got a ticket in my hand for a midnight screening of Indiana Jones 4. I worked as a Production Assistant for one day on the set down in New Haven so whether or not my name is in the credits remains to be seen (it would be pretty awesome, though - even if it was for only a day's work). If you see the movie, look for my name!

Happy Birthday, Mike!
May 21, 2008

Today is May 21 and that happens to be current IC co-writer Mike Smith's birthday. This movie was made to celebrate. (Ren shot it!)

Happy Birthday, Mike!

Shady Glen
May 20, 2008

Comic is up and if there was any explanation to why it's been a few days, one look at the comic should spell it out for you.

Just wanted to pop in and say hello! Ren and I are off to Connecticut for dinner. Why? Because we can. True New Englanders know where to go for the best cheeseburgers and thy name is Shady Glen. What's for dinner? Fried cheese. The kind of meal that trumps years of salad-eating. Meal of champions. Of GODS.

Hope everyone's following the Democratic primaries!

Delays and an old friend, Mark Parish
May 16, 2008

Comics are taking a little longer than expected. Mike is going to start helping with the base colors, which would take a load off my plate, but that doesn't change the next two comics I have sitting on my desk with ink work about 85% done for both. Soon enough - at this point, I'm not stupid enough to say how much IC will be updating, at least not until we get into the groove, but I will say, it'll be updating.

On a fun-related note, just for the hell of it - I launched an IC chapter that I've been wanting to do for a year now. It's not a comic (which contributes to making IC more mixed-media - see: "where I've wanted it to be for years") but is a frequently updated journal by California-based paparazzo, Mark Parish. It's a way to expand/explain the IC universe a little. So let me introduce Mark Parish's journal, F-Stop Blues. It'll update anywhere between several times a day or once every few days. Enjoy!

Concerning "Trixie"
May 14, 2008

Before I put up the new comic - I want to say a few things. First, I want to thank everyone who wished IC a happy birthday, I really, really, appreciate it, I can't imagine my life without this comic or its supporters who have always helped me in tough times.

Second, I realize by saying this, I'm probably destroying every ounce of film buff cred and snobbery I've held up over the years, but... there wasn't a single thing I hated about the movie, Speed Racer. I'm dead serious. Just pure out fun. So, for all the people (see: "haters") who think that I can't simply enjoy a dumb movie - everyone, this is how you make a real good dumb movie! (It has also reaffirmed by life-long celebrity crush with Christina Ricci.)

And third! To honor my fierce enjoyment of Speed Racer, I'd like you all to watch this trailer (edited by Mike Smith) for the new "Mario Kart Movie:"

Here's to five more!
May 12, 2008

I raise a glass today in honor of my longest running project, Instant Classic.

After five years, the comic has certainly seen its changes. And even though the site hasn't been a stranger to missing updates, its always provided me with a constant - an anchor to weigh down how chaotic my life tends to get.

I've made many friends through the comic - I've often said that because the humor is so alienating at times (my amazing ability to never appeal to a mass audience), the few who honestly enjoy it, are people who I know I can be friends with. This theory has proven itself over and over.

The comic started when I was 18 in response to not being satisfied with my previous attempt, BriWorld, which I did for a year (last week actually marked six years of doing webcomics). I'm 23 now. Last part of high school, all through my life at college, and now lasting while out of college. It's been an amazing ride and I honestly never want it to end.

If you've caught on to the theme of the strip, you've noticed that my passion in for filmmaking. Most of the time, the comic stops updating due to opportunity to work on film - mine or otherwise. Occasionally, the temptation to end the comic and do movies full time presents itself. Sometimes I take it more seriously than others, but the balance always prevails.

Now with Mike Smith joining the writing team, the comic is better than ever. Just to make things clear, Mike has always been part of the crew of IC - he's a big reason why IC is IC. Hell - a big example is the music in Prologue's #100. Mike's idea and selection.

All in all - I feel incredibly proud. Thank you all for the greatest thing in my life - now let's keep moving forward!

Five Years
May 12, 2008

Comic will be up this afternoon - but I wanted to let everyone know that today is officially IC's fifth birthday. I'll talk about this more when I put up the comic, but I just wanted to extend a quick thank you to everyone know - I couldn't imagine my life without the comic at this point."

Aftermath of Wellesday
May 7, 2008

As promised, Wellesday was celebrated last night in honor of Orson Welles's birthday. We ate Welles-themed food, watched "The Stranger," and oh yea, Ren and I decorated a Welles cake

And of course, me posing with the cake and my signed Orson picture

Working from the Shoulder of a Giant
May 6, 2008

I was going to have a new comic up, but then it dawned on me that today is the birthday of my hero, Orson Welles. Please forgive the slight sentiments and the comic will resume midday tomorrow.

I know it sounds cliche to say it, but Welles is the reason why I got serious about filmmaking. Yes yes, Citizen Kane and all - but it fascinates me that he was able to make even better movies later in his life out of his own pocket when everyone else forgot about him. My favorite movie of all time is his Falstaff story, "Chimes at Midnight," of which I was fortunate enough to see a 35mm print a couple years ago. I continue to be in awe of this man as his work inspires me day to day as an artist.

Tonight, I am baking a "Free TOSOTW" cake - maybe there will be pictures.

Happy Cinco de Mayo!
May 5, 2008

A very happy Cinco de Mayo everyone. Let's celebrate with a new comic! This comic officially starts the third part of Brothers Donathan. Something to note, this is the first comic that was co-written by partner-in-crime Mike Smith, who's been an influence of IC since the beginning of the strip. He'll be joining me for writing duties through the completion of Brothers Donathan. The comic is already better for it!

Lots has changed since last I made myself visible - for one, I live in Easthampton, MA now. Other than that, not much to say, been working incredibly hard on filmmaking as of late, including being hired as editor and then just finishing final cut on that film I worked on back in October.

I'll be updating tomorrow as well, and I'll probably have more to say when I'm not so dang tired.

Have a good holiday everyone!
